Hospice Volunteering
By Abdul Qureshi
ABOUT ME
My name is Abdul Qureshi and I'm a senior at Sport and Medical Sciences Academy. My family has always been a very important thing to me. They've always been there for me whenever I needed them and vice versa. I love every single one of them with all of my heart, that’s why it was so hard when my cousin got diagnosed with Leukemia in 2017. The news was really tough to swallow, especially because of the fact that he was so close to me in age. I spent days thinking about how it could’ve been me, and the longer I spent time with him in the hospice the more I saw how the environment took a toll on him. He told me about how much he hated it and how he didn’t have any friends there. I tried going as often as I could, but when he passed, I found myself wishing I could’ve been there for him more. For my capstone, I want to volunteer at Evergreen Health Care Center and spend time with the patients there and be a friend for them, and make this terrible experience a little bit better for them.
